Concentration Areas / Lines of Research

The Health Sciences program, at the Academic Masters/PDH level, is contemplated in an Area of Concentration and six lines of research, detailed below:

AREA OF CONCENTRATION: HEALTH SCIENCES

1 – EPIDEMIOLOGY, PREVENTION, DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES AND MENTAL DISORDERS.

Description: This line of research seeks to clarify the mechanisms of neurological diseases and mental disorders through basic science, translational, clinical and surgical studies. In basic chair studies, experiments are carried out with animal models and tissue culture of human or animal origin in order to clarify the molecular mechanisms of diseases and the study of new therapeutic targets. Clinical and surgical studies address the epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the central nervous system.
Professors involved: Antônio Jose da Rocha/ Ariadiny de Lima Caetano/ Claudia Santos Oliveira/ Francisco Romero Cabral/ Guilherme Peres Messas/ Jean Goncalves de Oliveira/ João Luiz Vitorino Araujo / Jose Carlos Esteves Veiga/ Luciana Malavolta Quaglio/ Maria Fernanda Mendes/ Paulo Roberto Lazarini/ Pedro Shiozawa/ Quirino Cordeiro Junior/ Ricardo Riyoiti Uchida/ Roberta Sessa Stilhano Yamaguchi/ Rosane Lowenthal/ Rubens Jose Gagliardi/ Sergio Rosemberg.

2 – ETIOLOGY, DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF DISEASES OF THE MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM.

Description: Covers topics related to the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases of the neuro-musculoskeletal system. It approaches studies related to the promotion, diagnosis and treatment of the group, axis of the mentioned situations. This line approaches research projects with discussion of interventionist, preventive, epidemiological and treatment aspects, through systemic neuro-orthopedic phenomena and their functional results, as well as the movement approach. The line of research approximates the thematic axes that originate studies and research projects, through the experience of the advisors. The transdisciplinary approach directed towards the elaboration of content in orthopedics, focusing on etiology, diagnosis and treatments, from microscopic to macroscopic aspects, facilitating the application of strategies to develop teaching and research in an interdisciplinary way in this area.
Teachers involved: Alberto Naoki Miyazaki / Claudia Santos Oliveira / Claudio Santili / Diego Galace de Freitas / Nilson Roberto Severino / Patrícia Maria de Moraes Barros Fucs.

3 – MOLECULAR MECHANISM, EPIDEMIOLOGY, PREVENTION, DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF COMMUNICABLE AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Description: This line of research addresses epidemiological and clinical studies with emphasis on preventive, pathophysiological, therapeutic and epidemiological aspects related to communicable and infectious diseases. Clinical studies will include data collection with epidemiological importance, more adequate clinical characterization and proposals for therapeutic intervention. From the molecular point of view, the studies may address standardization of molecular tests, use of molecular tests already established both for etiopathogenic study and for diagnosis of the disease.
Professors involved: Adriana Bittencourt Campaner / Eitan Naaman Berezin / John Verrinder Veasey / Jose Cassio de Moraes / Marcelo Jenne Mimica / Marco Aurelio Palazzi Safadi / Mauro Jose Costa Salles.

4 – MOLECULAR MECHANISM, EPIDEMIOLOGY, PREVENTION, DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF SYSTEMIC DISEASES

Description: This line of research addresses pre-clinical, translational and clinical studies with emphasis on pathophysiological, pharmacological, therapeutic and epidemiological aspects related to systemic diseases. Pre-clinical studies will employ in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro experimental protocols with the possible use of experimental animals, human and non-human cells to approach functional, cellular and molecular aspects involved in biological processes. The knowledge obtained in basic research will support translational research, which bridges pre-clinical and clinical research. Such research aims at the applicability of knowledge in the medical field.

5 – MOLECULAR MECHANISMS AND DEVELOPMENT OF DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF NEOPLASTIC DISEASES.

Description: In this line of research, the objective is to molecularly characterize tumors throughout their evolution, seeking typical expression profiles of benign, pre-malignant and malignant lesions, in order to find prognostic markers, diagnosis and targets for therapy, as well as how to characterize the epidemiological profile of our patient population.
Professors involved: Antônio José Gonçalves / Carlos Sergio Chiattone / Carmen Lucia Penteado Lancellotti / Gustavo Cardoso Guimaraes / Jose Carlos Esteves Veiga / Luciana Malavolta Quaglio / Luiz Arnaldo Szutan / Wagner Ricardo Montor.

6 – QUALITY OF LIFE AND HEALTH PROMOTION

Description: This line of research aims to detect signs of physical-psychic-emotional exhaustion in students and health professionals and propose humanization actions that reverse or prevent this exhaustion. Students and health professionals are subject to shifts or intense schedules of activity that demand a lot of attention. Even prepared and technically qualified, the decrease in the quality of life of these groups can negatively influence the quality of service provided to users of the public health system.
Professors involved: Carmen Lucia Penteado Lancellotti/ Lívia Keismanas de Ávila/ Luis Vicente Franco De Oliveira.
